MAY –  Walking in Beauty

There is a Navaho blessing which states “May you walk in beauty.”   This signifies a way of life focused on balance, harmony, and respect for nature and all living things. It’s about living in a conscious relationship with the natural world, cultivating a sense of peace and understanding, and recognizing the beauty and light within oneself and others. In essence, it’s a spiritual path centered around honoring the sacredness of life.

In Taurus Season, we slow down a little, deepen our connection with our own bodies,  Mother Nature and with inner and outer Beauty.

This is the essence of spiritual connection. There is always Beauty… everywhere, just waiting for us to acknowledge it. This is true in both our external and our inner worlds.

True beauty is a calling card from Source. Beautiful natural occurrences remind us who we are at our essence and draw us gently home, where we are perfect, complete and magnificent

This month we hone our focus and open more and more to the beauty around us and within us.

Walking in Beauty”: Closing Prayer from the Navajo Blessing Way Ceremony

In beauty I walk
With beauty before me I walk
With beauty behind me I walk
With beauty above me I walk
With beauty around me I walk
It has become beauty again

Today I will walk out, today everything negative will leave me
I will be as I was before, I will have a cool breeze over my body.
I will have a light body, I will be happy forever, nothing will hinder me.
I walk with beauty before me. I walk with beauty behind me.
I walk with beauty below me. I walk with beauty above me.
I walk with beauty around me. My words will be beautiful.
In beauty all day long may I walk.

Through the returning seasons, may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.
With beauty before me may I walk.
With beauty behind me may I walk.
With beauty below me may I walk.
With beauty above me may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk.
My words will be beautiful…

Daily Practices

CREATE A SACRED SPACE

Choose a space  in your home which is easily accessible and visible to you every day.

Play some beautiful music and gather together some beautiful objects. Include something from the four elements –  Eg A shell or an oil burner for water; A feather for air: A candle for fire;  A piece of wood, plants, flowers or special stones / crystals for earth.

Each morning, set 5 minutes aside to freshen up your sacred space. Light the candle, freshen the flowers, change the water.

Sit quietly, bring yourself into presence and connect with all the beauty in front of you

BRING BEAUTY TO THE MUNDANE

Become aware of bringing beauty into every part of your day. EG: Lay the table in a beautiful way; Arrange your fruit or food in a creative, beautiful way;  Pour a bath for yourself or a loved ones with beautiful oils, candles and bubbles;  Take extra care while getting dressed for the day.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN BEAUTY

Spend some time (5 to 10 minutes) every day simply being – In nature – simply observe and immerse yourself into a natural environment, gaze upon a plant, flower, crystal, rock formation. If you’re unable to get outside, connect with an indoor plant.

Look at yourself with soft eyes  – look through the critical judgements to the essence. Look at the wrinkles or age spots in your hand or face with the same eyes as you would look at a beautiful old tree.

Make a point of seeing beauty even and especially in places that appear to be unattractive or ugly at first glance.

RANDOM ACTS OF BEAUTY

Reflect on how you might be able to bring beauty to somebody else – present them with some wild flowers of anything else that comes to you.

Creative Project

Leaf Rubbing

  • Go for your Walk in Beauty – leave enough time to soak in your environment.
  • As you walk (slowly), pick an assortment of leaves (they need to still be pliable / Avoid leaves that have cracked or have become hard. Fresher leaves will create better images, as you’ll be able to see the veins more clearly.
  • When you’re back inside, place the leaves onto on firm surface / smooth board in a design. (The bumpy, veined side of the leaves should face upwards, which will give you a better image).
  • Move them around until you’re happy with the layout
  • Place your paper carefully over the leaves
  • Rub crayons over the leaves –( you can use charcoal pencils, wax crayons or  pencil crayons)  The raised areas of the leaves will create beautiful images on the paper. To make the design more interesting, you can use different colours for the different leaves.
  • Remove the paper from the leaves. Now that you have a general impression of the leaves, you can start defining the leaf edges by sketching with pens or paints.
  • From here on out, put your own creative spin on this project. Paint or doodle between the leaves with paint or gel pens. You can add more detail if you like as you go. Leave it soft or make it detailed – the choice is yours.
